Livin’ Off The Land

July 12, 2007 by dailygnome Leave a Comment

The second summer after we moved in Jason built a garden out back. Over the years we’ve planted grapes, blueberries, tomatoes, herbs, beets, pole beans, peppers, a variety of greens and other vegetables that have been hit or miss (artichokes don’t flourish when you start them in July). Five years ago I didn’t know the difference between an annual and a perennial, but my black thumb is slowly taking on a brownish-olive hue. This year we ventured beyond the standard nursery starts and planted some exotic veggies from seed. The watermelon radishes and rainbow carrots look promising, while the asparagus beans were sacrificed to the slugs (despite multiple rounds of coffee ground ammo to deter them).

Now our garden is in full swing. Carson loves to hang out and watch the garden grow as we harvest, compost, water and weed. One of his favorite activities is filling the plastic pots with rocks and then dumping them out. But that’s been replaced with helping us harvest. Unfortunately since I’ve introduced him to the beans he thinks everything that’s green is ripe for the picking. Now if only I can redirect his energy into pulling up the weeds.
