We stopped by the old house to pick up a few final belongings and drop off a welcome gift for the new owner. It was the first time Carson had seen the house empty.
Our house is sad, he said, looking around at the blank walls as his voice echoed in the space.
I explained that the new owners will be coming soon and bringing their own furniture and pictures for the walls.
This house will be loved and very happy, I explained.
But there’s nobody here now.
He thought a hug might help.
Do you want to give the hug in your room? I asked.
He furrowed his brow, looking at me like I wasn’t understanding.
It needs to be on the outside, Mama. So the whole house can feel it.

What a kiddo. He really seems to have empathy beyond his years–and can express it. Hope he keeps that.
