Crosssing off #10

August 14, 2009 by dailygnome 3 Comments

October is fast approaching and I realized if I am going to finish my list I may need a little help.

One sunny morning last week Carson and I gathered our supplies, spread out a drop cloth in the back yard and painted the big blank canvas that has hung in our stairwell for more than a year. Carson quickly took over as creative director on the project. Mix here! More yellow! I want splatters! He took the Jackson Pollock approach.

To give the painting dimension and texture we selected some of his school artwork, ripping it into pieces and pasting it onto the canvas.

Winter Wonderland on Mt. Hood

March 11, 2009 by dailygnome 2 Comments

We spent the last few days at a cabin up on Mt. Hood. Nervous about snowshoeing in with the kids and all our gear. Unnecessary as they turned out to be real troopers. Hiking out proved a bit rough, especially after two days of continuous snowfall (Funny how we didn’t notice the trail being mostly downhill on the way in.) After an hour and a half of breaking our own trail uphill the car was a welcome sight!

We had fun. Found a great sledding hill not far from the cabin. Ate maple snow. Watched old Disney cartoons found on VHS. Created snow angels. Put lots of logs on the fire. Played in a snow cave. Unplugged.

Hadley discovered the joy of catching snowflakes on her tongue. She ate them all day and found them very tasty. Even without maple syrup.

Nice to get away. Can’t wait to do it again next year. Our new tradition.

An Adventure

Off on a little adventure (as Carson likes to say). Addressing a few things on my list. Looking forward to having some fun. Back with show and tell later this week!

#8

February 13, 2009 by dailygnome 1 Comment

With my book club reading To Kill A Mockingbird it was easy to knock off #8 on my list (I may have casually suggested that we mix things up and read a classic).

When I first read this book 20 years ago it had a profound effect on me. I remember thinking if I ever had children someday, I would hope to instill in them the values of Atticus Finch.

I loved his hands-off, lead by example parenting style resulting in two fiercely independent kids having a clear vision of right and wrong. Not sheltering them from the fact that people can be cruel and bad things happen, while at the same time teaching them to see the good in people. To look at the world from another person’s perspective and be tolerant instead of judgmental.

Rereading this book also reaffirmed my choices of the middle names Atticus and Scout.

This time around I took more interest in the relationship between Jem and Scout. I watch Carson being such a caring and protective older brother now and wonder how their relationship will evolve through the years. My hope is that through their many stages, growing pains, struggles and successes, they step into adulthood not only sharing the bond of siblings but also emerging as good friends.

This story deals with dark issues but I came away with an appreciation for human goodness and kindness, for compassion, and was reminded the importance of community.
